God Opposes the Proud

“But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.””

James 4:6

There's a lot of grace here. God gives more grace, and he gives grace to the humble. But in the middle sits one of the most sobering lines in the Bible. God opposes the proud.

Not ignores. Opposes. Pride doesn't just make you unpleasant to be around. It puts you on the wrong side of God.

Why would pride, of all failings, get that response? Because pride is the one that says you don't need him. The greedy and the lustful at least know they want something outside themselves. Pride says. I've got this. I'm self-made. I don't need help from anyone, God included. It closes the very door that grace comes through.

Humility opens it again. So many of the Bible's rescue stories begin with someone admitting, in one form or another, that they can't save themselves.

That's freeing, if you let it be. You don't have to be self-sufficient. You were never designed to be. The people who receive the most grace are the ones who stop pretending they don't need it.
